What Does a Youth Baseball Uniform Need? Rules and Checklist

What the rulebook requires, what leagues provide and what families buy

A youth baseball uniform needs a numbered jersey that matches the rest of the team in color, trim and style, plus a cap, pants, belt and socks in the team's colors. In Little League, the jersey must also carry the Official Shoulder Patch on the left sleeve. Safety gear, including helmets, catcher's equipment and rubber-soled cleats, follows its own rules.

This checklist is for managers, league uniform coordinators and parents getting ready for a spring season. It covers Little League, the largest youth baseball program, and points out where other leagues differ. Always confirm details in your league's current rulebook.

What does Little League require on the uniform?

Little League's uniform rule, Rule 1.11, sets the core requirements. The points that affect jersey design are listed below, based on the rule text published by Baseball Rules Academy and current Little League guidance.

Requirement

What it means for your order

Numbered uniforms identical in color, trim and style

Every player on the team wears the same jersey design with a number

Official Shoulder Patch on the left sleeve

Leave the upper left sleeve clear of artwork

Sleeves about the same length on each player; not ragged, frayed or slit

Order one sleeve style per team

No tape or material of a different color added to the uniform

Build the design into the jersey instead of adding tape or stickers

No glass buttons or polished metal

Pullover crew and V-neck jerseys avoid the issue

Pitcher's exposed undershirt or sleeves must be solid, and not white or gray

Choose an undershirt color that matches the team

Little League does not set a minimum number height for its divisions, so ask your league whether it has a local standard. High school is different: the NFHS rule requires plain numbers at least 8 inches high on the back, according to Baseball Rules Academy's NFHS rule summary.

Can the Little League patch be printed on the jersey?

No. The Little League Official Shoulder Patch policy says screen printing, sublimation or any reproduction of the patch is not permitted. Patches are worn centered on the left shoulder sleeve, or centered on the left chest of a sleeveless jersey, and the patch is required in all divisions for regular season and tournament play.

When you design a sublimated jersey, keep the left sleeve area simple so the sewn or ironed patch sits cleanly on top. Most leagues hand out patches with uniforms; Little League's patch FAQ covers who pays for them.

What changed for 2026?

Little League's 2026 rule updates removed the "neoprene" distinction in the pitcher sleeve rule, so it now covers all sleeves a pitcher wears. If your pitchers use compression sleeves, pick a solid color that is not white or gray.

Jewelry is no longer a blanket ban. Little League now says jewelry may be worn unless it poses a risk of injury, in which case umpires can have it removed. Medical alert jewelry and sunglasses are allowed.

Who provides each piece of a youth baseball uniform?

It depends on your league, but Little League International describes a common split in its equipment guide for parents and leagues.

  • Undershirt and sleeve color for pitchers, solid and not white or gray

  • One or two extra jerseys if your league takes late sign-ups

SPORTY jerseys are fully custom, so you can build the design around your league's rules. Send your league or tournament rulebook with your order if you want the design checked, as noted on the SPORTY baseball page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do baseball jerseys have to be button-front?

No. Little League requires a matching numbered uniform, not a specific neck style. Crew-neck and V-neck pullovers are common in youth baseball.

Can teammates have different sleeve lengths?

Yes. Sleeve lengths may vary between players, but each player's two sleeves must be about the same length.

Are metal cleats allowed in youth baseball?

Not in the Little League Major Division and below. Players there wear rubber-soled or molded cleats.

How much does a full youth baseball uniform cost?

A full SPORTY uniform with jersey, pants, hat, socks and belt is $97 per player. Our baseball jersey cost guide shows the roster math.

Build a jersey that is ready for opening day

Check your league's rulebook, leave room for the patch, and order once rosters are set. Our spring baseball ordering timeline shows when.
