What Does a Youth Soccer Uniform Need? Rules and Checklist
The five required items, plus the league rules that trip teams up
A youth soccer uniform needs five items: a shirt with sleeves, shorts, socks, shinguards and footwear. That list comes from Law 4 of the Laws of the Game, which most youth leagues follow (IFAB Law 4). Your league then adds its own rules on numbers, colors and whether you need a second kit.
This checklist is for team managers and coaches getting ready for a new season. It separates what the Laws require from what individual leagues add, so you know which questions to ask before ordering.
What equipment does Law 4 require?
Law 4 lists five separate compulsory items. Leagues usually supply the first three, and families supply the last two.
Item | What the rule says | Who usually provides it |
|---|---|---|
Shirt with sleeves | Must have sleeves; teams must be distinguishable from each other and the officials | Team or league |
Shorts | Required; undershorts or tights must match the main color of the shorts | Team or league |
Socks | Tape or material on the outside must match the sock color it covers | Team or league |
Shinguards | Suitable material, appropriate size, covered by the socks | Family |
Footwear | Required | Family |
Many recreational programs bundle the jersey, shorts and socks into registration. AYSO Region 12 in Torrance, for example, includes one jersey, one pair of shorts and one pair of socks in its fee (AYSO Region 12). Players provide their own shinguards and shoes in most programs (AYSO Cedar Rapids).
Does a soccer jersey have to have sleeves?
Yes. Law 4 specifically calls for "a shirt with sleeves" (IFAB Law 4). A sleeveless or tank-style jersey does not meet that wording, even if it works for basketball.
When you design a soccer jersey, choose a sleeved cut. SPORTY's crew neck, V neck and drop V styles all come in a short-sleeve version, which is the safest choice for soccer. SPORTY also offers cap-sleeve versions with extra-short sleeves; if you want one of those, confirm with your league or referee assignor before ordering a full roster.
What are the rules for undershirts, tights and sock tape?
Base layers are where teams get stopped at check-in, especially in cold weather. Law 4 sets three color rules (IFAB Law 4).
Undershirts must be one color matching the main color of the jersey sleeve, or a pattern that exactly copies the sleeve.
Undershorts and tights must match the main color of the shorts, or the lowest part of the shorts. Everyone on the team wears the same color.
Tape or sleeves over socks must match the color of the sock where it is applied.
A design tip that saves headaches: give your jersey a solid sleeve color. A solid navy or white sleeve is easy to match with an off-the-shelf undershirt. A sleeve covered in stripes or gradients means a matching base layer is hard to find.
Do youth soccer jerseys need numbers?
Law 4 allows a player's number on the shirt but does not require one. Numbering rules come from your league or competition, and they vary.
Oregon Youth Soccer's competitive league requires numbers on the back of every jersey, including the goalkeeper's. Duplicates are not allowed, and the number must match the game roster (OYSA league rules).
Anne Arundel County's recreational youth rules do not permit duplicate jersey numbers on a team (Anne Arundel County).
US Youth Soccer's national championship rules make goalkeeper numbers optional (US Youth Soccer).
If you are unsure, number every jersey, including the keeper's, and avoid duplicates. That meets the strictest of these rules. Sublimated numbers are dyed into the fabric, so they will not peel off mid-season.
Can players wear jewelry in a soccer game?
No. Law 4 forbids all jewelry, including necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings and rubber bands, and taping over jewelry is not allowed (IFAB Law 4). Referees inspect players before the match and can send a player off the field until the item is removed.
New earrings are the usual problem. Tell families at the first practice so nobody misses a game.
Pre-season uniform checklist for team managers
Run through this list about a month before your first game.
Ask your league whether it supplies jerseys, shorts and socks, or whether the team orders them.
Get your league's rules on numbers, number size and duplicate numbers.
Ask whether you need a second, contrasting kit. Our guide to how many jerseys a youth soccer team needs covers when that applies.
Plan a goalkeeper jersey in a color that differs from both teams and the referees.
Choose a sleeved jersey style with a solid sleeve color.
Collect sizes with the SPORTY size guide and assign numbers before you order.
Remind families about shinguards, cleats and no jewelry.
Frequently asked questions
Do the shorts have to match the jersey color?
Law 4 does not require shorts to match the jersey color. Some competitions even let one pair of shorts serve both the light and dark kit (US Youth Soccer Presidents Cup rules). Any tights must match the shorts.
Can a goalkeeper wear different shorts from the team?
Often, yes. Law 4 requires the goalkeeper's colors to be distinguishable from the other players and officials. Ohio high school rules, for example, do not require the keeper's shorts to match teammates' (OHSAA). Check your own league's rules.
Build a jersey that passes check-in
Pick a sleeved style, keep the sleeve color simple and plan numbers before you order. SPORTY jerseys are $26 each in every size, with no minimum order.
